Keeping Promises

During the recent campaign for city council and mayor, the board posed four questions to the candidates concerning issues of interest to many members of the Association. The responses of the winners in District 1 (north side of the river) and District 2 (south side of the river) and of the mayoral race were generally in agreement. Councilors Wurzburger and Calvert and Mayor Coss all three pledged, for example, to support the current ban on short-term rentals, as well as measures that would limit lot splits and infill development in the Historic Districts and restrict the large commercial buses and semi-trailer trucks that are polluting the air and creating noise and traffic problems.

Here are the questions and their answers. If these issues are important to you, please watch the papers (and this web site) to see that the promises are kept.

Fred Klein Boulevard

It has been almost two years since the Canyon Neighborhood Association won its case against Fred Klein, the courts ultimately agreeing that he acted without a legal easement when he bladed a long driveway across city land. His goal was to provide access from Cerro Gordo Road to a parcel of real estate, which could already be reached through the Cerros Colorados subdivision. The fear was that this breach of the canyon would ultimately result in a connection between Cerro Gordo and Hyde Park Roads and yet more traffic in the neighborhood.

Despite the legal victory, the scar from Klein's road is still there, and continued erosion has created not only an eyesore but a danger to hikers accessing the Dale Ball Trails. The association is urging the city to take action.
