Canyon Neighborhood Association Opposes Efforts to Undermine Traffic Calming in Historic Districts

January 1, 2004. The board of directors of the Canyon Neighborhood Association has voted to strongly oppose efforts by some city politicians to discriminate against citizens living in historic districts by denying them the same protection from the hazards and disturbances of speeding traffic as is available to residents of other neighborhoods. The association also called for a change in the current approval process which, unlike any other plebiscite, unfairly counts unreturned ballots as votes against traffic calming. In addition, the board opposed any efforts to make the current traffic calming approval process more restrictive than it already is or to extend voting to people who live outside the neighborhood and are not negatively affected by the traffic hazards. Members of the association will attend the January 5th meeting of the Finance Committee to oppose efforts to undermine traffic calming.

PUBLIC OFFICIALS TO REMEMBER

We asked public officials to attend our meetings on the Grevey tract and assist in conveying our position. Special thanks go to County Commissioner Paul Campos who attended meetings and arranged appointments with county officials. The development is outside the City in the Extraterritorial District. Thanks also go to City Council members Karen Heldmeyer, Patti Bushee, Rebecca Wurzburger, and David Pfeffer and County Commissioner Mike Anaya for their assistance and attention to this matter. The only elected official who did not return our calls was County Commissioner Paul Duran.
